Colorless Rainbows: The Shade of Grief

By

To lose something
Means you had something

The ache in your chest is but
A candle casting shadows upon your wall
Proof you once held something, a flame perhaps
Proof you are alive, after all

The absence is loud
The void is vast
How many more of these days will it last?

A cloud that never empties
No matter how much it rains
Painting colorless rainbows
With all of this pain

They say it gets better
But first it gets worse
Oh, what a blessing
But even more so -
A curse

If I had to do it over again
I'd do it all the same
Maybe I'd go first, or maybe -
I'd find something else to blame

To lose something means you had something
I can't help but wish I had it once more
Just for one more day; or two, or three, or four...

I held your hand
As you took your last breath
Took mine too
As I watched you kiss death

How can something that's lost forever be found?
I suppose I must find my own way
Of keeping you around

I'll miss you for eternity
In your favorite places, I'll roam
I'll strum your old guitar
And love you 'til the cows come home

To lose you means I had you,
And though I ache, I know -
You are the song I carry
Everywhere I go
